We were so thrilled earlier this year to get an opportunity to work with the amazing team at Farncombe Community Garden.
The 2-acre site opposite Broadwater School has been transformed in the last 3 years into a very special community garden that welcomes volunteers, schools and charities to enjoy the space.
We were lucky enough to be given our own space within the garden and, with the additional support from AJT Landscaping who cleared the site and built some raised beds, we set about getting young people into the garden. The first group came from Broadwater School, supporting young people who would benefit from having time in the garden. With sessions on Wednesday mornings, it was the perfect ‘mid-week break’, making it easier to cope for the balance of the week.
This group did a fantastic job moving barrow loads of soil into raised beds, planting potatoes, runner beans, sweet peas, strawberries and creating a raised flower bed and filling it with interesting flowers and herbs. There were lots of crafts too, jam jar painting and creating animal pebbles. Pond dipping was a real hit!
Just this week, we started supporting Godalming Junior year 6 pupils. The transition to Secondary School is tough for a lot of young people, and the Green Hub approach is intended to help build confidence and resilience, helping to make the next big step forward. Again, they will be helping to enhance the space further, sowing seeds and planting more plants with a sprinkling of weeding.
